Erie County SMART ( 26 )

The MRC has been designated as the official medical response organization of the Erie County Department of Health. The MRC and SMART have collaborated with the Western New York Public Health Alliance (Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans, and Wyoming Counties) to build regional response capabilities and communication tactics that will enhance awareness, preparedness, and response capabilities for acts of terrorism and public health emergencies. Erie County MRC is able to provide volunteer resources to the other seven counties of WNY through existing mutual aid agreements. The SMART operational goal is to enlist, train, and retain health professionals (physicians, physicians' assistants, nurses, pharmacists, mental health providers, veterinarians, epidemiologists, and technical specialists) and non-health professionals who will respond to public health emergencies voluntarily. SMART has participated in many local and regional training exercises, including NDMS Patient Reception, Radiologic Incident, Smallpox Vaccination Clinics, Strategic National Stockpile reception and distribution, Influenza Vaccination Clinics, Nerve Agent Antidote training, and Incident Command training. SMART was activated for several real-life emergencies including a mass vaccination for Hepatitis A outbreak, Continental Crash 3407, and Multi-county flooding incident and most recently H1N1 vaccination Points of Dispensing.
