The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) Program spotlights units that highlight the MRC Program's mission; underscore the importance of volunteerism; and promote collaboration at the local, state, and national levels. New spotlights will be added to illustrate the work being performed throughout the nation by MRC units.
Following the outbreak of Avian Influenza in Spring 2015, the North Iowa CERT-MRC decided to be proactive and prepare for the outbreak. Because their jurisdiction is surrounded by a variety of animal farms, they were concerned that Avian Influenza could spread to their jurisdiction. If an outbreak did occur, the unit would be responsible for assisting with the cleaning of facilities or animals. The North Iowa CERT-MRC took inventory of their animal response trailer and ordered necessary supplies, including decontamination materials and personal protective equipment (PPE). Next, the unit partnered with EMTs and the fire department to ensure that all volunteers were fit tested for N-95 masks. Finally, the unit reviewed their policies and procedures for activation and deployment to ensure they were prepared. The North Iowa CERT-MRC unit’s steps to prepare themselves strengthened and ensured their community’s strength and resilience.
