| Profile: |
The MRC unit in Caddo-Bossier, Louisiana, is in the process of change. With lessons learned from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Caddo-Bossier MRC has a new mission and is developing a web-based system to help manage volunteers during disasters and for non-emergency events, in addition to providing access to training. There are currently 200 volunteers in the database. The unit has recently procured an enclosed trailer which will be stocked with equipment and supplies to set-up a full operational shelter clinic within 30 minutes of activation.

Dual volunteers of NWLaMRC and Pool of Siloam participated in Heart to Heart Day for Women, in celebration of National Women's Health Week. This event was funded in part by the OWH/DHH. Participants enjoyed a heart healthy meal while learning about heart risks in an interactive presentation by an MD and dietician. Topics included obesity, smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. Educational activities, health screenings, risk factor screens, resource booths and entertainment were provided. Each guest was provided a gift bag with additional resource materials.

Unit volunteers are participating in flu clinics at Hope for the Homeless day shelter on Thursday evenings during
the month. H1N1 and seasonal flu education is provided and vaccines are being administered to adult chronically homeless clients during a late afternoon food distribution. Vaccines are also available on outreach as volunteers visit the homeless where they live in encampments, abandoned buildings or on the streets.

MRC volunteers at the Pool of Siloam Medical Ministry assisted in the set-up and operation of a church sponsored warming shelter at the New Room for chronically homeless adults for 8 days during a sub-freezing weather emergency. Prior to opening the shelter, volunteers visited encampments to encourage men and women to seek shelter and provided blankets and food to those who chose to stay in camp. Volunteers provided first aid, comfort items and medical care and remained on site round the clock for the first 4 days, then 12-18 hours per day.

Unit participated in a state-wide LAVA Call-down drill. Based on an increase in H1N1 Flu activity, the scenario called for mobilizing volunteers to participate in immunization activities. Nurses, physicians and pharmacists were sent internal, email, and voice notification (phone, pager, fax, and SMS/Text) and asked to respond that the message was received.
