Profile:
The Defiance County Medical Reserve Corps is a part of the Defiance County General Health District, a rural county county located in Northwest Ohio with a county population of 38,432. The Defiance County MRC began in 2003 and was a recipient of a federal MRC Project Demonstration Grant. The Defiance County MRC has enjoyed a partnership with the Red Cross, the EMA and the healthcare providers within the county. Representatives from each of these entities serve on the leadership committee and provide guidance and technical assistance to the MRC program coordinator. The Defiance County MRC has been integrated into the county EOP and has been recognized as a viable and needed asset to the county during emergency and non-emergency events. MRC volunteers have been a tremendous resource during mass flu immunization clinics, particularly during H1N1 response. MRC volunteers also assist in non-emergency events such as early childhood screens and shots for tots. MRC volunteers have assisted during flood and tornado repsonse efforts. Defiance County MRC has maintained a collaborative relationship with the other five MRC Programs within Northwest Ohio which include Henry, Fulton, Paulding, Putnam and Williams counties and will be again offering the annual fall conference to the MRC volunteers and to the partners within the region. The theme for the 2010 conference is Building Blocks for Preparedness and will be held on September 24, 2010. National recognixe presenters, including Dr. Charles Kennedy, Karen Voss, Shirley Brooks-Jones, and Jason Barger are the presenters for the conference. CNE's and CEU's will be offered to participants.

Building Blocks for Preparedness Fall Conference: The 6 MRC Units from Northwest Ohio pool resources to provide this conference to MRC volunteers and partners to buld thier skills and build their preparedness capabilities. The conference is divided into three segments. The first segment is titled Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and is presented by Charles Kennedy, PhD and Karen Voss, LCSW, BCD. Dr. Kennedy and Ms. Voss are invloved with the PTSD Program at the VA in Albany. The second segment is Extraordinary Experience with Volunteerism as presented by Shirley Brooks-Jones in which she shares her experience with Delta Flight 15 on 9/11/01 and the path this experience has paved for her. The last segment is presented by autohor and motivational speaker, Jason Barger who will present from his book, Step Back from the Baggage Claim.

Defiance County LEPC's Alternate Care Site Committee with the NW Ohio Regional Healthcare System will conduct a Defiance COunty Medical Surge Seminar and Exercise. Through participation in the seminar and exercise, MRC volunteers and other stakeholders will be educated to the medical surge concept following the MEMS model using the scenario of hsopital evacuation. MRC volunteers will be trained for operations of an Alternate Care Facility. Through actual set-up of a small scale ACC: Train maintenance personnel, who are planned for set-up; evaluate the Defiance County ACC template; develop the ICS structure and required positions for set-up and operations of an ACC; and identify basic resources for the ACC set-up.
