| Profile: |
The Bay Counth Health Department has established a Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) unit for the Bay County area, which includes Washington and Calhoun counties. MRC volunteers will be activated in case of a hurricane or other natural disaster, bio-terriorism, pandemic flu, or other communicable disease outbreak to assist residents or evacuees relocating to the area.
The Bay County Health Department was very successful in establishing a cadre of medical provider volunteers in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina devastated parts of Louisianna, Alabama and Mississippi and a few thousand people evacuated to Bay County. By continuing the successful process developed to deal with Hurricane Katrina, Bay County will be prepared to handle future disasters. Our objectives are to recruit, train, and maintain at least 50 MRC volunteers in 2007.
As the Bay County Area MRC is developed, members will be given the opportunity for training on the Incident Command System and related areas. A diverse base of trained volunteers will result in Bay County being able to effectively deal with medical situations created by future natural disasters and terrorist events. Volunteers will have varying interests and levels of involvement, and we look forward to making this a rewarding experience to all involved. Anyone interested in learning how he or she can be involved in the Bay County Area MRC should contact Shawn Collins by calling 850-872-4455 ext 1208
