Profile:
The Panhandle Medical Reserve Corps, administered by Panhandle Public Health District, is developed to engage health care professionals in helping the Panhandle communities prepare for, respond to, and mitigate emergencies and disasters by providing a group of readily trained and available volunteer professionals who supplement and assist the local medical emergency response system. The MRC program is administered by the Panhandle Region Medical Response System (PRMRS). PRMRS comprises 11 Counties and includes 9 hospitals and 2 public health jurisdictions. This group has a Steering Committee made up of the Chief Executive Officers of the 9 hospitals and a Leadership Committee made up of representatives from each hospital, emergency managers, Region 1 Behavioral Health, two public health districts, the FQHC, and Emergency Medical Services. A Planning and Implementation Team which is five of the above mentioned representatives provide direction and coordination of the group. The MRC will fall under a newly formed regional Citizen Corp Council in the Panhandle. Our mission is to establish policies, procedures, and protocols regarding operations, managing spontaneous volunteers, and conducting recruiting initiatives within the medical community in order to establish core volunteers to assist in mass immunization/prophylaxis clinics, create general medical and mental health surge capacity, and public health emergency preparedness planning. Most of the Panhandle of Nebraska is designated as a health professional shortage area. Because of that, our initial recruitment efforts will target those health professionals not already employed by or working with acute care facilities. Our initial recruitment efforts will be towards nurses in the school, community, and parish settings. Other disciplines will be targeted in later.
