Profile:
In 2003, the Upper Cumberland Regional Health Office of the Tennessee Department of Health began recruiting and training volunteers to respond in the event of a public health emergency. The Upper Cumberland Region is a fourteen county region in eastern middle Tennessee with approximately 3,600 volunteers representing the population. The database mainly consists of non-medical volunteers, but some medical volunteers are registered. Volunteers were initially trained to assist during smallpox PODs, but currently volunteers are being trained on the 48-hour dispensing PODs to respond against anthrax. POD sites are being set up in all 14 counties. Volunteers participate in annual training and exercises. IS-100 and IS-700 classes are being offered throughout the region.
