| Profile: |
In the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the Lafayette Parish Medical Society created a medical clinic within the Cajundome shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana to aid storm victims who were displaced. However, despite our best efforts, we realized there were tremendous opportunities to further serve the citizens of Louisiana. With input from medical, health, and public and private sector colleagues, the Louisiana Emergency Medical Unit (LEMU) was developed. It began as a community-based partnership and currently includes representatives from more than seventy medical facilities, private and public corporations, local governments, and public health organizations. The LEMU will close the gap in emergency health services in the critical hours after a major hurricane or comparable disaster, providing emergency medical relief operations. The ultimate goal of the Louisiana Emergency Medical Unit is to improve access to and utilization of health care services throughout Acadiana, not only during emergency situations, but year-round.
On August 20, 2006, the LEMU committed to the creation of the Acadiana Medical Reserve Corps (AMRC) to serve as the organizational unit for staffing of the LEMU. Our current volunteers include healthcare providers representing physicians, nurses, pharmacists, The Acadiana Medical Reserve Corps program was designed to build a team of healthcare professional including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, allied health personnel, mental health providers, and lay volunteers that will activate and augment the existing medical response during a man-made or natural disaster. In addition, the AMRC team will address community needs and public health education and assistance throughout the year. The mission of the AMRC is to mobilize a trained medical and medical support unit to augment emergency operations and responses during man-made or natural disasters and address community needs throughout the year.
