What is the MRC Unit’s Focus?

The focus of the New Mexico MRC is to:

  1. Promote disease prevention, health education and health literacy
  2. Participate in public health education, training and preparedness
  3. Provide ongoing and continuous training for the members
  4. Establish the unit's emergency preparedness and response capabilities
  5. Augment local agencies with support in primary care triage, medical services, disaster response, and community public health services

What is the Volunteer’s Background?

Ms. Schreier has a degree certification in education.

What did the Volunteer do to be in the Spotlight?

Ms. Schreier is a very active volunteer who has spearheaded volunteer training, outreach, and recruitment. She developed a record of volunteer training that will be used throughout the state by New Mexico MRC volunteers. She represents the New Mexico MRC unit through the Citizen Corps, County Local Emergency Planning Committee, and Metropolitan Medical Response System.

When and Why did the Volunteer Join the MRC?

Ms. Schreier heard about the MRC and thought it was a wonderful idea for a program to have a backfill of medical professionals during a disaster. She joined the New Mexico MRC in September 2005 to assist with the unit’s hurricane response effort.

What are Some Activities that the Volunteer has Participated in?

Ms. Schreier is currently researching the type of basic training that is required of volunteers to respond in an emergency situation and is developing core competencies that can be used locally and possibly for the state. She is training on ARC shelter development to incorporate with New Mexico MRC unit’s training.

Ms. Schreier has developed promotional items for the Albuquerque MRC unit such as a brochure and table top display, and she is developing a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation for the unit.

In 2005, Ms. Schreier participated in the unit’s deployment and local response to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. She provided administrative support by organizing unit deployment papers and volunteering in the local convention center. Ms. Schreier felt that the assistance she provided during the hurricane response gave her the opportunity to support fellow medical MRC volunteers so they could focus on aiding hurricane survivors.

Fun Facts

Ms. Schreier’s family is accustomed to supporting the community. Her husband provides logistical support to the MRC unit, and her daughter-in-law volunteered as an EMT at a shelter during the hurricane response. In addition, her father was involved in preparedness through his work as Deputy Director of Defense. Ms. Schreier thinks her work in the community and involvement in emergency response is continuing a family tradition.
