MRC Unit Focus

The focus of the Mid America Medical Reserve Corps is to support the Surgeon General’s Public Health Initiatives by supporting the resources of the local public health infrastructure in the event of a large-scale emergency or disaster.

Volunteer Background Information

Richard Keeney retired from a 30-year career as a railroad machinist in September 2005.

What did the Volunteer do to be in the Spotlight?

MRC Coordinator Karen Whitlow stated that Mr. Keeney’s commitment as a volunteer has helped to build the Mid America Medical Reserve Corps and that his willingness to help has made him an asset to the unit. In addition, Mr. Keeney has dedicated himself to improving his service to the community by attending classes to become a medical assistant.

When and why did the Volunteer Join the MRC?

Mr. Keeney has been a part of the MRC for more than 1 year. He and his wife were motivated to join in response to Hurricane Katrina. He wanted to offer his skills to a volunteer program that was well organized and connected to a national agency. He found the MRC to be a tremendous opportunity for senior citizens to use their experience in the community and promote education on emergency medicine.

What are Some Activities the Volunteer has Participated in?

Mr. Keeney developed identification cards for Mid America Medical Reserve Corps volunteers and attended orientation meetings to create cards for each volunteer. In addition, Mr. Keeney has participated in mass dispensing exercises at the Regional Volunteer Reception Center. He also has attended training courses on Basic Disaster Life Support, Community Emergency Response Team, and psychological first aid.

Fun Facts

Mr. Keeney promoted the Mid America Medical Reserve Corps to the Air Force Association, of which he is a member. This led to a reception recognizing the unit and a certificate of appreciation for community involvement.
