 MRC Focus and Activities

The MRC of Southern Arizona engages medical professionals in volunteer positions that will support and augment the community's medical response system during disasters or other emergencies. The unit is focusing on the establishment of different task forces, but primarily focuses on surge capacity for local medical facilities.

Mr. Marshall is an nurse and has been a licensed physician assistant for 20 years.

What did the Volunteer do to be in the Spotlight?

MRC Director Scott Ingram, describes Augustin as “a dedicated medical professional and qualified RN that wants to do his part for the community, as well as a great and selfless volunteer.”

Mr. Marshall’s first activity with the unit was with the 2005 hurricane response efforts. Mr. Ingram stated that “he epitomizes the volunteer spirit that made things happen in this tragedy. Augustin and his colleagues did what had to be done to provide much needed medical care, and they did it under extraordinarily difficult circumstances. He is still very emotional, and at the same time, humble about all the things he did to help hundreds of perfect strangers.”

When and Why did the Volunteer Join the MRC?

Mr. Marshall has been with the unit since the fall of 2005. He joined the MRC of Southern Arizona to assist with addressing needs during the Hurricane Katrina disaster.

What Experiences has the Volunteer Encountered as a Member of the MRC Unit?

Mr. Marshall was deployed to Pearlington, MS for 1 week through the MRC/ARC partnership. He assisted in setting up a medical clinic at Charles B. Murphy School, where he provided first aid care to patients.

Mr. Marshall was deployed with five nurses and a doctor. He describes the experience as “very emotional, the staff cried everyday between setting up clinic and doing what needed to be done." Acknowledging that “the complete devastation he witnessed was a very humbling experience, he wanted to do as much for people that he could." He stated, “We never know how fortunate we are until we see what can happen to other people.” He also wanted to highlight that there was a “wholesale cooperation and gratitude from all the people that we were helping during this disaster."

The Arizona Star in Tucson, AZ, published an article and picture of Augustin Marshall in recognition of his experience with assisting victims of the Hurricane Katrina disaster.
