When was the Unit Founded?
The Montgomery County Medical Reserve Corps was established in September 2003.
What Drives the Unit?
The unit's mission is to provide medical and non-medical volunteers to assist the public health infrastructure in maintaining the public's health throughout the year and in times of crisis. To accomplish this mission, collaboration with several local partners has been necessary.
How Many Volunteers Does the Unit Have?
The unit has 428 volunteers from Montgomery County. There are 700 members in the 8 counties that work cooperatively.
How Large is the Unit's Staff?
The unit has one part-time coordinator and one quarter-time administrative assistant.
Why was the Unit Selected?
The Montgomery County MRC has acted as a leader to other MRC Coordinators in West Central Ohio by establishing monthly meetings with MRC Coordinators from the eight surrounding counties to discuss issues, develop ideas, and share information and resources. The unit works with the Ohio State MRC Coordinator to ensure these local issues are addressed. The unit also has provided ongoing support and leadership in establishing and developing MRC units. In addition, the Montgomery County MRC often represents West Central Ohio MRC units in local and state events.
What are Some of the Unit's Achievements?
- The Montgomery County MRC has coordinated a standardized ID badge, logo, volunteer database, and newsletter template for Champaign, Clark, Darke, Greene, Miami, Montgomery, Preble, and Shelby counties. The unit also has developed and shared two training programs for MRC volunteers with these eight counties.
- The Montgomery County MRC has worked with the Academic Nursing Coalition on Disaster Preparedness to establish a means of using students during an emergency and to educate them on disaster response.
- The Montgomery County MRC has collaborated with the Ohio Citizen Corps and the Ohio Hospital Association in the development of the Emergency System for Advance Registration of Volunteer Health Professionals.
What are Some of the Unit's Recent Activities?
- The Montgomery County MRC planned, coordinated, and implemented a volunteer reception to show appreciation to volunteers and recruit new members.
- The Montgomery County MRC participated in a full-scale post office anthrax drill to test the Biohazard Detection System procedures for decontaminating and treating postal employees, their families, and customers. An MRC physician was the acting medical director, and nurses helped with the completion of assessments. The postal workers were actually washed down for this exercise and transported to a clean facility for assessment and treatment.
- Montgomery County MRC volunteers worked in flu clinics, giving shots and directing and assisting patients with paperwork.
- The Montgomery County MRC has established the volunteer-run training, recruitment, and communication committees. Individuals on the training committee are already teachers and learn the material to train other MRC members. The recruitment committee develops ideas on how to recruit new volunteers. The communication committee works on maintaining contact with volunteers.
