Organization Spotlights - Fall 2008

Louisiana Association of Substance Abuse Counselors and Trainers

LASACT is Louisiana's Association of Addiction Professionals and Providers whose mission is to promote and enhance Louisiana's addiction professionals and providers in areas of education, prevention, treatment, and advocacy. LASACT is a not-for-profit that is self-supported by membership dues and fees for services. LASACT's board members, professional membership, and small but dedicated staff work tirelessly in support of a shared vision of excellence in service to Louisiana's citizens suffering from the disease of addiction.

LASACT also ecompasses the Certification Examining Board (LASACT CEB) which is Louisiana's affiliate allied with the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC). IC&RC member boards work cooperatively to set minimum standards for member board-issued addiction certifications and to develop testing instruments appropriate to these certifications. IC&RC has over 37,000 addiction professionals certified at the reciprocal level worldwide.

LASACT's Addiction Workforce Development Program encompasses the Annual Educational Conference, the Louisiana Addiction Counselor Training Program (LACT), and numberous ceritfication test preparation courses and speciality topic workshops. The thirty-third annual conference will tentatively be held July 26-28, 2009 at the Shreveport Convention Center.

LASACT donated the time of its Executive Director and strategic planning consultant to lead the Louisiana Disaster Deployment Taskforce for Addiction Services. With input from key stakeholders, this team developed a comprehensive plan to bring qualified addiction professionals into Louisiana to serve in case of a disaster. LASACT has also submitted a proposal to facilitate the recruitment and training of individuals for a database of qualified addiction professionals to serve as needed and in case of a disaster.

To fulfill LASACT's mission of advocay on behalf of addiction professionals and providers and those they serve, the organization is vigilant in their attention to local, state, national, and international trends and current events. Therefore, LASACT welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with the Medical Reserve Corps.
