The MRC is housed within the North Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center, and will be made up of a diverse group of health professionals and other volunteers committed to “prevention of injury and illness, eliminating health disparities, and improving public health preparedness.” Registration Open for the 2006 National Leadership and Training ConferenceOnline registration is now open for the 2006 MRC National Leadership and Training Conference, to be held in Dallas, Texas, April 18–21. Hurricane Season 2005 UpdateMany thanks to all of the units that updated the Regional Coordinator on their activities during the 2005 Hurricane Season. As a result of these updates, the final report shows that more than 1,300 MRC volunteers in Region IV were activated to assist with hurricane response and recovery. Great work! A New Year’s ResolutionEnsure to update your unit’s online profile at least quarterly. In Fiscal Year 2005, the National Web site averaged almost 800 visits per day. Some of these visitors were probably potential volunteers looking for information on your unit. Was your unit’s information up-do-date? Report on Trends in U.S. Health StatisticsHealth, United States, 2005—Report on Trends in U.S. Health Statistics AvailableThe National Center for Health Statistics publishes an annual report on trends in U.S. health statistics. The most recent report—Health, United States, 2005—is now available for download on the CDC Web site. This year’s report also contains a special feature on adults age 55–64 years, which is becoming the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population. Categories of statistics included in the report include: healthcare utilization, health disparities, health insurance, and healthcare facilities. Much of the data is available by state and by geographic region. Helpful Online ResourcesJust a reminder: There is a collection of Web sites available that may be useful to MRC Unit Coordinators. The easiest way to look at these links is by topic—if you go to the archive page, click on the drop-down box next to “filter by topic” (at the top of the page), and you will see the topics available. Pick a topic, such as Risk Management/Liability, click the “look” button, and you will see the Web resources I’ve collected under that topic, along with a brief clipping from the page and possibly a note from me about the link. Recent additions include: The First Victims Project, The Center for Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Surveillance in Hurricane Evacuation Centers and The RAND Public Health Preparedness Database.
