She provides technical assistance and support to the existing MRC units in the region and helps people interested in the MRC program to start a unit when there is not currently an active MRC in their local community. Ms. Sayre works closely with individual units to advance the U.S. Surgeon General's public health priorities and coordinate with the goals of the Office of the Civilian Volunteer Medical Reserve Corps.
Stacy grew up in Fort Lauderdale, FL, the daughter of a Miami Police Officer and Phone Company Clerk. Hazardous weather and social conditions were a constant fixture in South Florida during this time, just as much as a strong sense of responsibility and ethics was in the Sayre household. The Sayre family was always prepared for potential events including hurricanes and anything else that might arise thanks to mom and dad’s constant vigilance. Stacy began to find the value of volunteering as a teen with the Southern Bell Pioneer Club, participating in events like the Special Olympics. Ms. Sayre attended Florida State University and received her bachelor’s in computer science and software engineering. She began her career as an intern, later becoming a scientific programmer and an IT project coordinator for the Magnet Science and Technology Division of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory affiliated with FSU. She worked with leading scientists from around the world at this facility, of which there are only nine like it in the world, on incredible projects including cryogenic studies for NASA and computer modeling superconducting and resistive magnetic technologies used in industrial magnets and research across industries. Ms. Sayre then worked at the Florida Division of Emergency Management as the lead Geographic Information Systems programmer and worked on many public information projects to educate Floridians and tourists about the hazards in their communities. She also worked closely with local and state officials to provide relevant tools and information to facilitate all phases of emergency management. During the 2004 Florida hurricane season, she was involved in the response and recovery for a historic hurricane season of one tropical storm and four hurricanes, assisting with coordinating efforts among the emergency support functions, public information officers, and volunteers at the State Emergency Operations Center. It was this experience and working with the volunteer agencies, most notably the Civil Air Patrol, Salvation Army, American Red Cross, and AmeriCorps that began her true appreciation of volunteerism in disasters and the need for community education before a disaster to empower all citizens. Stacy’s hobbies include hiking and exploring anywhere new, playing fetch with her dog, contemplating how to get her cat to lose weight, reading anything and everything, volunteering and mentoring youth, traveling to see family and friends, and spreading the word about the need for personal preparedness.
