Commander Brad Austin serves as a Senior Program Officer in the Office of the Civilian Volunteer Medical Reserve Corps in the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General. He is responsible for providing oversight for programmatic and operational activities in support of MRC units nationwide.

CDR Austin previously served in the HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) as a Senior Program Management Officer. In this role, he trained and deployed to the HHS Secretary’s Operation Center as a member of the HHS Emergency Management Group. He also represented HHS on the National Disaster Medical System Executive Secretariat and served as the HHS Chair to the DHS/HHS Preparedness Oversight Committee, the coordinating body for all DHS and HHS bioterrorism and disaster preparedness grant funding. Prior to this assignment, CDR Austin served as the first Project Officer to the National Bioterrorism Hospital Preparedness Program.

First commissioned in 1990, CDR Austin started his Federal career in the Health Resources and Services Administration working with the Ryan White CARE Act. He then served in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, managing a variety of substance abuse treatment grant programs. He had the privilege of serving in The White House, providing technical expertise and coordination among substance abuse treatment, mental health, and HIV prevention. 

CDR Austin received his Bachelors from the University of California at Berkeley, and his Masters in Public Health, Health Services Administration, from San Diego State University. He is Board Certified in Healthcare Administration and a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
